Basel Excellence Fellowships for Master's Study

The University of Basel Chemistry Department offers a limited number of fellowships for international candidates applying for MSc studies with outstanding records of accomplishment. These are highly competitive and the sole criterion is excellence as measured by academic records and professional accomplishments (papers, patents, scientific outreach).

The fellowship amount is 25 000 CHF delivered in three installments as a contribution to the cost of the Master study program.
Please note that all successful applications will automatically be entered into the national Alfred Werner Master’s Student Scholarship competition run by the Swiss Chemical Society. If this is awarded the student is obliged to accept the Werner fellowship since it provides a larger contribution to the Master study (30 000 CHF).
Selected candidates preferably commence their studies in the fall semester. For good reason, admission in the spring semester is possible.

Application Procedure

The call for applications is open from 1 January to 15 February for Fall admission and 1 September to 15 October for Spring admission.

Applications should include:
- either the typical application documents for Master’s studies at the University of Basel or a transcript of undergraduate records
- curriculum vitae
- at least one letter of recommendation

These should be sent by email as one pdf file to:

Living in Basel

Basel is a small but cosmopolitan city on the shores of the river Rhein, and is the center of the Swiss chemical industry. The strength of its chemical and pharmaceutical industries makes Basel a strong choice for studies in chemistry. German is the dominant language but its proximity to France and the strong presence of global organizations mean that English and French are also widely spoken. The Master’s program is in English.

The fellowship will cover the tuition fees of the University of Basel but only part of  living expenses during the study period as the cost of living in Switzerland is high. International students may be permitted limited part-time work during their studies (work regulations for student visas are subject to change and it is the student’s responsibility to clarify these details with the relevant authorities). Teaching assistantships within the department may be available to help further offset costs (maximum 6000 CHF in total over three semesters). Detailed information on living expenses and further helpful advice for international students can be obtained from the office of Social Services of the University of Basel.
