SUMMARY:New photoredox reactions (Dreyfus Lecture 2018)
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will discuss the advent and development of new con
cepts in chemical synthesis\, specifically the application of visible ligh
t photoredox catalysis to the discovery or invention of new chemical trans
formations.  This lecture will explore a strategy the discovery of chemic
al reactions using photoredox catalysis.  Moreover\, we will further desc
ribe how mechanistic understanding of these discovered processes has led t
o the design of new yet fundamental chemical transformations that we hope
will be broadly adopted.  In particular\, a new catalysis activation mode
that allows for the development of C–H abstraction and decarboxylative
coupling reactions that interface with organometallic catalysis.\\r\\n\\r\
\nCamille & Henry Dreyfus LectureshipIn memory of the Dreyfus brothers\, t
he Camille and Henry Dreyfus Foundation Inc. has established the Dreyfus L
ectureship at the University of Basel. The annual Lectureship will bring a
leading chemist from the United States to the Basel campus to deliver a s
eries of talks and to meet with faculty and students  in order to enhance
the relationship between Swiss and U.S. science.
