Sonja Schmid appointed TTAP

Professor Sonja Schmid has been appointed as the new assistant professor of physical chemistry (with tenure track) in the Faculty of Science. She will take up the post in the Department of Chemistry on 1 January 2024.

Schmid studied nanosciences at the University of Basel and received her PhD in 2017 from the Physics Department of the Technical University of Munich. Between 2017 and 2020, she conducted postdoctoral research at TU Delft, before commencing her tenure-track assistant professorship at Wageningen University (Netherlands) at the beginning of 2021.

Her research focuses on experimental single-molecule sensing and protein dynamics. Schmid and her team are developing novel nanopore and fluorescence/FRET technologies that enable, for example, real-time observations of the vital movements of biomolecules. These innovative tools have valuable applications in basic as well as applied research.
